Morelos

The State of Morelos is one of the 32 Federal Organizations of Mexico and it is located to the center of the territory. Morelos is bordered by the states of México to the north and west, Puebla to the east, and Guerrero to the south. Morelos was traditionally Nahuatl-speaking territory, and variants of theMorelos language are still spoken today in towns such as Cuentepec, Hueyapan, and (a very different variant) Tetelcingo. Morelos was named after José María Morelos, one of the heroes of Mexico's War of Independence, and once home to Emiliano Zapata. Morelos, Mexico has an area of about 4,941 km², making it the second-smallest of the country's states. Despite its small size, Morelos's terrain and resources are extremely diverse, varying from high, cool, pine-forested mountains to hot, humid sub-tropical areas with mineral springs, and then again to dry, desert-like hillsides. The capital of Morelos is the city of Cuernavaca which is known for its Mayan and pre-Columbian ruins of Xochicalco.
